It was a colourful evening on Thursday, as the third edition of the Malaika Tribute Awards went down at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi. The event – founded by gospel artiste Daddy Owen in 2011, celebrates achievements by people living with various forms of disabilities.
“In awarding people who positively affect the lives of the people living with disabilities, we are encouraging others to be a part of this and making sure that people are aware of the issues that these people face. It’s all about appreciating our unsung heroes and paying tribute to them,” says Owen.
Legendary singer Reuben Kigame was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award, as fast-rising gospel rapper Brian Sammy won the Young Achievers Award In Music. Other winners were Emmanuel Chepsoi (Sports), Paul Mugambi (Activist of the Year), Catherine Simaton (Good Samaritan of the Year), Fern Awinja (Notable Educator of the Year), Haron Gwaya (Innovator of the Year), Melius Kariuki (Campaign of the Year), Jane Theuri (Community Crusader of the Year) and Muhib Norani (Special Recognition). All the awards came with a Sh100,000 cash prize.
