Instagram developing 'nudity protection' feature for chats

User privacy will be protected.

Meta has confirmed that it is developing a feature that will allow users to block nude photos in Instagram messages as well as other unwanted messages.

This feature is still under development, Meta said.

The technology will not allow the organisation to view the actual messages nor share them with third parties.

“We’re working closely with experts to ensure these new features preserve people’s privacy, while giving them control over the messages they receive,” Meta spokesperson Liz Fernandez said.

This move comes in after a report published this year by the Center for Countering Digital Hate found that many women were sent sexual images by men.

The Pew Research Center published a report that found 33 percent of women under 35 had been sexually harassed online.

The company stressed that user privacy is protected, and promised to share more details in the coming weeks.
