Rising temperatures posing threat of global warming

Humans are responsible for all global heating over the past 200 years.

In Summary
  • The melting of polar ice caps and glaciers due to global warming is causing sea levels to rise, leading to the loss of land and displacement of people and animals.
  • The most important step is to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that we emit into the atmosphere.

Global warming refers to the long-term increase in Earth's average surface temperature, primarily caused by the build-up of greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

These gases trap heat from the sun and prevent it from escaping back into space, leading to a warming of the planet. This process is often referred to as the greenhouse effect.

The Climate Change 2023: synthesis report states that “humans are responsible for all global heating over the past 200 years leading to a current temperature rise of 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels, which has led to more frequent and hazardous weather events.”

Some adverse effects of global warming include contribution towards significant changes in Earth's climate, including more frequent and severe weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, floods and hurricanes.

The melting of polar ice caps and glaciers due to global warming is causing sea levels to rise, leading to the loss of land and displacement of people and animals.

Global warming is rapidly causing ocean acidification. The increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are being absorbed by the oceans, causing them to become more acidic, which is harmful to marine life.

Global warming is causing changes in the habitats of plants and animals, leading to the extinction of some species and the decline of others.

There are numerous ways in which global warming can be curbed and potentially eliminated.

The most important step is to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. This can be achieved by using cleaner energy sources such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power, as well as reducing the use of fossil fuels.

Reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible. This reduces the amount of energy needed to create new products and decreases the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, which produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Walk, bike or take public transportation when possible. If you need to drive, consider energy-efficient vehicles, hybrid vehicles or electric vehicles. People are slowly opting for these types of vehicles because they are environmentally friendly.

In conclusion, global warming is a significant threat to our planet and requires urgent action from all of us.

But with proper methods, strategies and sustainable practices, we can eradicate and mitigate the effects of this menace.
