Hygiene is a basic thing that everyone embraces.
The surrounding of a salon speaks a lot about the customer service that is offered.
For customer satisfaction salon hygiene is one of the key factors.
It should be of high standards to attract many people.
A lot of people walk into salons for several services such as hair plaiting, manicures and pedicures.
There are so many things that people do share in a salon, tools such as hair scissors and combs-these cannot be avoided hence hygiene is mandatory.
Gloria a client in one of the city salons says laundry which includes towels and bed linens that are frequently used from client to client should be cleaned regularly to prevent the transmission of bacteria.
“We cannot basically say that every time a client comes in the towel has to be disposed of and a new one being bought, rather it should be washed thoroughly and sun-dried to kill bacteria,” she says.
Winnie another client says most ladies find it uncomfortable when walking along the streets and their scalps become itchy which is less pleasant and this makes them change their beautician the next time they what their hair done.
“Hygiene is key, walking along the streets or being in public is so annoying because you have dandruff and an itchy scalp,” she says.
Caro a beautician says regular sterilisation of salon equipment such as hair scissors and washing of the combs, and brushes should be done between uses because of oil accumulation from hair and skin to prevent bacteria that may cause infection.
“After using shareable tools such as combs, they should be cleaned with disinfectants such as spirits and antiseptics such as Detol to kill disease-causing bacteria,” Caro says.
The beautician says the cleanliness of the furniture, floor, and surfaces also prevents the spread of bacteria.
Some of the contagious skin diseases that most people can contract if hygiene is not observed include Fungal diseases.
"Most ladies are always aware of the skin diseases that are there and the damage they can cause to the scalp such as sores and intense itchiness if hygiene is not observed," Caro says.
