The tree is known as the “sausage tree” (Kigelia Africana) due to the long, sausage-like fruits it bears.

Here's how to make muratina at home;

Ingredients

  • Sugar cane juice
  • Fruits from the sausage tree
  •  Honey

The amount of the ingredients depends on how much muratina you would like to make.

Preparations

Step 1

Open up the fruit (sausage fruit) and cut it into pieces.

Step 2

Leave it to dry in the sun for a few hours.

Step 3

After sun-drying, boil them in water for around 30 minutes.

Step 4

After boiling the fruits, sun-dry them again and add a considerable amount of sugarcane juice.

This is the point where you add honey as well to your liking.

Step 5

Leave it out in a warm place in a jerrycan.

Step 6

It should be left in a warm place to ferment for around four days.

The longer it stays, the more alcohol-concentrated it will be.

Step 7

It will have fermented enough when it becomes a little sour and has an alcoholic odour.

Serve to family members and friends this festive season, possibly with grilled meat and enjoy.
