Poetry is a form of literature work that seeks to evoke a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a specific emotional response through language that is arranged for its sound, rhythm and meaning.

Held annually on March 21st, world poetry day celebrates one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity.

The day was first adopted by UNESCO on March 21 during its 30th General Conference in Paris in 1999.

It aimed to support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.

Poetry continues to bring people together across the continent, to speak “a common” language.

Famous poets in Kenya include: Tony Mwochama, Teardrops, Mufasa Poet, Juliani, Hart-the-Band among others.

Many artistes have used poetry to spread their message, be it through a song, poem or even a movie.

Celebrate World Poetry Day today by writing or reading a poem or two.
