Feeding your little angel can feel daunting sometimes, however, there are ways to keep it simple so that you don’t spend too much time cooking and prepping.

Your baby can go through periods of increased hunger and fussiness but according to a Nanyuki-based nutritionist Wincate Wangari, the increased hunger means that your baby is going through a period of fast growth and breastfeeding could make them want to eat more often.

“It is completely normal for babies to want to be held and feed all the time, but newborns need to eat small amounts frequently throughout the day and night,” she said.

At nine months, when your baby is more active Wangari says the baby will need 750-900 calories a day.

“Half of that should come from breast milk, that is about 720ml a day. Although at that age, breastfeeding is more of comfort when they are scared, upset or hurt,” Wangari said.

She recommended feeding the baby first before breastfeeding so that they do not lose their interest in eating which happens after you breastfeed.

“Beyond six months, breast milk alone will not provide all the nutrition, so your child needs additional foods rich in protein, zinc and iron for better growth,” she said.
