Zanzibar suspends Zuchu for 6 months after controversial show

The Zanzibar Arts, Census, Film and Cultural Council (BASSFU) has taken action against Tanzanian Songstress Zuchu by imposing a six-month suspension from all artistic activities in Zanzibar.

BASSFU plays a role in upholding the cultural traditions in Zanzibar.

This came after Zuchu's performance at the Fullmoon Kendwa Night show on February 24, 2024. Videos of the performance were circulated online.

According to BASSFU, investigations conducted showed that Zuchu's performance was not in line with the cultural norms of Zanzibar.

The executive secretary of BASSFU Omar Abdalla Adam said the council has the responsibility to oversee the customs, traditions and culture of Zanzibar.

"We are officially suspending Zuchu from engaging in any artistic activities in Zanzibar for six months, starting from  March 5, 2024," Abdalla said.

In response to her suspension, Zuchu through her record label WCB apology for the move.

She further went ahead and shared a video of her issuing an apology through her Instagram page.

She clarified that her actions were meant to entertain her fans and regretted any negative impact it may have had on society.

"I would like to use this opportunity to apologise for the words I used in the rhyme that caused chaos at the Full Moon Party Kendwa Beach Zanzibar festival recently. I know that the words have brought confusion to many of you and brought a negative meaning to society and my fans," she said.

Zuchu said it was not her aim to mislead, erode morals, or cause trouble for anyone.

"I am taking a pledge today to work with my team to ensure that such incidents do not happen again at future concerts. I apologise again to the community and the Arts Council (BASATA) who are my guardians," she said.

On February 24, Zuchu performed on the night of Full Moon Kendwa on the Island and is alleged to have sung an indecent lyric rebuking Diamond admirers.

She claimed that despite their temporary breakup, Diamond Platnumz would not leave her for any other lady even those who would go the extra mile to offer him their 'SIM 2'.

“Huyu kwangu hatoki hata mmpe mku…” she sang.
