But smoke still spread to every floor of the 120-unit building, likely because the door to the apartment was left open, the city's fire department commissioner Daniel Nigro told reporters at a news briefing.

The Grammy-winning rapper, who grew up in the Bronx, teamed up with The Mayors Fund to Advance New York City to offer financial support for victims of the fire.

Most of the victims killed in the fire were from Gambia, and their families planned to bury them in their homeland.

She went ahead and posted on her Instagram stories that a few artists are also helping to fundraise for the burial. They include Fat Joe and Remy MA.

“I’m extremely proud to be from the Bronx and I have lots of family and friends who live and work there still. So, when I heard about the fire and all of the victims, I knew I needed to do something to help," said Cardi B in a statement to CNN.

She also urged her fans to help her in raising the funds.

"I cannot begin to imagine the pain and anguish that the families of the victims are experiencing, but I hope that not having to worry about the costs associated with burying their loved ones will help as they move forward and heal. I send my prayers and condolences to everyone affected by this horrific tragedy,” she added.
