President Joe Biden boards the presidential jet.

US President Joe Biden is under intense scrutiny amid questions over his age and cognitive abilities as he seeks to beat Donald Trump in November's election.

Top House Democrat Hakeem Jeffries has met Biden, telling his caucus in a letter that he shared their "full breadth of insight, heartfelt perspectives and conclusions about the path forward" with the president.

More members of his own Democratic Party have called for Biden to stand aside, after a stumbling debate performance last month fuelled concerns over his ability to serve another term.

The president stood firm in a defiant hour-long news conference on Thursday night, where he dismissed the concerns about his campaign.

But the conference also was marred by occasional errors, including mistakenly referring to Vice-President Kamala Harris as "Vice-President Trump".

The president will hold a Friday evening rally in Detroit, Michigan as he continues to defend his re-election bid.

The two oldest presidential candidates in history

With the increasing scrutiny over the age of US President Joe Biden, let's take a look at how old some of the most recent presidents have been when they began their first term in office.

Currently, Biden is 81, and Donald Trump is 78.
