Mahamri is a delicious East African pastry that is commonly enjoyed for breakfast or as a snack.
These sweet and fluffy triangular-shaped breads are deep-fried to perfection, resulting in a crispy exterior and a soft, pillowy interior.
Mahamri is typically served with tea or coffee and can be enjoyed plain or with a side of coconut chutney.
Follow this simple recipe to prepare homemade mahamri that will for sure impress your family and friends:
Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon yeast
1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup warm water
Vegetable oil for frying
Below are the steps on how to prepare
In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, yeast, cardamom powder, and salt.
Add the coconut milk and warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix well until a soft dough forms.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles and divide it into small equal-sized balls.
Roll each ball into a circular shape, approximately 1/4 inch thick.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium heat.
Fry the mahamri in batches until it turns brown.
Serve.
