Cabinet secretary nominee for Roads, Transport and Public works, Kipchumba Murkomen during vetting by the National Assembly Committee on appointments on October 19, 2022.

Cabinet secretary nominee for Roads, Transport and Public works, Kipchumba Murkomen has said his focus will be to ensure there is equity in the distribution of roads in Kenya.

Speaking on Wednesday when he appeared before the National Assembly Committee on appointments, Murkomen said if approved he will ensure roads reach even the rural areas.

"No child at this point in time should go to another constituency to see a tarmac road because we will do our best to construct more roads," he said.

Murkomen said tolling will help in getting revenue to build roads in other parts of the county.

Tolling is a form of road pricing typically implemented to help recoup the costs of road construction and maintenance.

"Tolling will help in raising enough revenue to maintain the big infrastructures that we are going to develop. We can save the other money from road maintenance levy and other sources of revenue to construct roads in other parts of the country," he said.

"Tolling on road is not an extra charge, it's a saving. If you look at the Expressway alone, you will realize that the cost of staying at Mombasa Road for three hours comes to a certain figure but that is a saving when reduced to 20 minutes."
