Why you should avoid excessive use of some vegetable oils

Some contain high levels of omega-6 fatty acids which could negatively affect our health.

In Summary

• According to Healthline, scientists have hypothesized that too much omega-6 relative to omega-3 may contribute to chronic inflammation.

• Chronic inflammation refers to a slow, long-term inflammation that lasts for several months.

Vegetable oils are plant-based meaning their oils are extracted from the seeds of plants.

Examples of plants whose seeds are used to produce vegetable oil include soybeans, grapefruit seeds or palm seeds.

They contain essential fatty acids which are beneficial to the body.

Nevertheless, there are some plant oils that contain high Omega-6 contents which should not be consumed in high amounts since they may be detrimental to our health.

According to Healthline, scientists have hypothesized that too much Omega-6 relative to omega-3 may contribute to chronic inflammation.

Chronic inflammation refers to a slow, long-term inflammation that lasts for several months.

Healthline stated that observational studies have associated  high intake of omega-6 fat to an increased risk of obesity, arthritis, heart disease, and inflammatory bowel disease, cancer and diabetes.

"Both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids, meaning we need them in our diets since our bodies do not produce them naturally," Healthline stated

According to Healthline, the vegetable oils that are high in Omega-6 that need to be taken in moderation include:

1. Soybean oil

2. Corn oil

3. Cottonseed oil

4. Sunflower oil

5. Peanut oil

6. Sesame oil

7. Rice bran oil

It also suggests that these oils are easily oxidized.

Oils that can easily oxidize may be harmful to our health since they may  lead to build-up of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

"The fat you eat is not only stored as fat tissue or burned for energy, it is  also incorporated into cell membranes."

"If you have a lot of polyunsaturated fatty acids in your body, your cell membranes are more sensitive to oxidation which is harmful to your health," Healthline said.
