Wintry weather can really take a toll on your skin.

It is twice as hard when it is the holiday season. During this period, many people suffer from dry, cracked and pale skin.

When temperatures and humidity drop in the cold season, the skin has to work harder to maintain adequate hydration.

The drier the air, the more moisture it sucks from your skin. As a result of this loss of hydration, you’re more likely to experience dryness, cracks in the outer layer of the skin, inflammation, and flakiness during the colder months of the year.

However, this does not have to be your potion this Christmas season.  You can definitely can protect yourself with a few winter skin care tips that are not only easy, but can be rather enjoyable.

Do: TAKE COLD SHOWERS

Yes, we all want to soak ourselves in a hot bath at the end of a busy day, but that will not give us buttery skin.

A cold shower during this cold season may sound like a punishment to many, but it's a proven fact that cold water is a lot better for your skin and hair than hot water is. Cold showers can help tighten your pores and smoothen your hair follicles. Plus, cold water is great for blood circulation.

Hot baths and showers can dissolve the protective barrier in the skin, which will eventually lead to dryness.

If you think you can't take an entire shower in cold water, just finish off a hot bath with a cold rinse and you should be good to go.

Do: AVOID SUGAR

We know that avoiding sugar during the holiday season can be quite the task with all the baked goodies that you'll end up ogling at around you.

However, sugar can be really bad for your skin. Digested sugar can latch on to your skin and can eat away at your collagen which will lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. So, maybe just stick to one serving of that plum cake.

Don't: SKIP SUNSCREEN

Wearing sunscreen in the cold season is a necessity. Even in winter, when the days are short and  the sun often hides behind the clouds, UV rays are beaming down ready to hit your skin.

Sunscreen should be a staple part of your routine no matter the weather or time of year.

Just because it's cold doesn't mean the sun is in hiding, the sun's harmful rays can affect you just as much.

So, don't skip on sunscreen when you step out of your house. And if you don't want too much product on your face, you could just opt for beauty products that contain SPF.

Do: LAYER UP MOISTURISERS

Experts have insisted that petroleum or cream-based moisturizers are best during the cold season.

It is advisable to apply moisturizer directly to your wet skin after bathing so the moisturizer can help trap surface moisture.

During this season, Cleanse your skin, but don’t overdo it. Too much cleansing removes the skin’s natural moisturizers.

Washing your face, hands, feet, and between the folds of your skin once a day is enough.

Do: AVOID EXTREME COLD

Cold temperatures can cause skin disorders or frostbite in some people.

Protect yourself from the wind. Cover your face and use a petroleum-based lip balm. Skin protectants that include petroleum and creams with ceramides are effective as well.

Don't: LICK YOUR LIPS

We all tend to lick our lips when they get chapped but honestly, this can make the problem a lot worse.

Your saliva can actually break down the skin on your lips even more and cause them to get dryer.

Invest in a good lip balm with nourishing and moisturising properties and you should be good to go.

Don't: PANIC OVER PIMPLES

We all like to look our best during the holiday season. But if you woke up on the day of your family get-together with a pimple on your forehead, remember the first thing to do is to not panic.

Opt for your regular beauty routine and the pimple should just go away in due time. And do remember that ultimately it is just a pimple and nobody apart from you will really care about it.
