My special selection pizza.

Oppie Dorp was established in the idyllic Stellenbosch, South Africa, in 2012. A quaint dining establishment that provides guests with a fun, relaxed, tasty and easy going experience. I had the chance to visit the place when on a recent trip to South Africa and I loved it the moment I walked in.

Warm, inviting colours on the walls ushered us in and the quotes on food that adorned the walls immediately caught my eye. As did the Italian waiter assigned to our table for the night.

The menu consists of simple and fresh dishes that have made the establishment one of the most popular ones. I started off with the smoked salmon consisting of Norwegian salmon served on a bed of fresh lettuce. It was accompanied by a combo of cream cheese, capers, onions and toasted home-made bread. It was a portion that was quite filling. The great thing about Oppie Dorp’s starters is that they can also be served in main course portions.

Then came the main course where we sampled the pizza of the day. It is usually made of bitong (spicy sun-dried meat) and danish feta cheese among other ingredients. I chose to have one created for me with ham, cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes and their signature pizza sauce. All their bread is made in house. My friend had the chicken and rice option. Sounds simple right. It was oven baked deboned chicken breast stuffed with olives, danish feta and fresh spinach, topped with white wine and herb sauce. Yes, it was as good as it sounds. I couldn’t resist taking a bite... okay maybe a few mouthfuls.

Oppie Dorps attention to food ingredients, preparation, presentation and even explaining what is in a meal is commendable. This reduces the confusion of ‘I did not ask for that’ or ‘I did not know that is what it was’ talk we witness every so often here.

Too stuffed to continue, the Italian waiter convinced us to try dessert; chocolate brownie served with vanilla ice cream. The presentation was super. Although the brownie recipe is top secret, I found it too sugary and happily shared it.

Combined with the lively company and great conversation, it was a great unforgettable night at Oppie Dorp. Check it out.
