The Central Organisation of Trade Unions secretary general Francis Atwoli has condemned government institutions over the use of false data.

In a statement on Wednesday, Atwoli urged the government institutions mandated to collect and analyse data to always ensure authenticity.

"We call upon the government institutions mandated to collect and analyse data to always strive to give a correct picture of the situation as it is," Atwoli said.

The ministry of labour made an analysis indicating that the number of registered CBAs has steadily declined over the years. Falling from 367, 600 in 2016 to 16, 100 in 2020.

Atwoli faulted the analysis saying the move was meant to incite members of COTU.

"It is an error of monumental proportions for the Ministry of Labour to claim that only 16,100 Kenyan workers benefit from CBAs," Atwoli said.

Further, Atwoli claimed that the mischief by the ministry of labour is coming at a time when Kenyans through COTU are expected to negotiate for a raise in the minimum wage.

"The government might be preparing a ground to paint a wrong picture on the performance of the economy," Atwoli said.

Atwoli claimed that the incident came at a time when the ministry of labour has come out to frustrate the activities of the labour movement in Kenya by, inter allia, refusing to gazette COTU nominee to the NSSF board of trustees.
