Police exhumed the body of a two-year-old girl on Monday after they said she was killed and secretly buried by her stepfather two years ago.
The remains had been buried in a sack in the compound where the main suspect, Hudson Nyamwamba Oburi, 27, has been living with his wife Rister Onjeri, 26.
He has been arrested.
Onjeri, who has two other children, said her husband killed the minor on December 24, 2020, and has been threatening her with violence if she reports the killing.
The circumstances of the death were not immediately established.
She told police she returned home from the river on December 24 and found her daughter lying unconscious on the ground.
She said the suspect told her his motorcycle had fallen on the child.
"I pleaded with him to allow me to take her to the hospital but he said the baby was already dead. He picked a blanket, wrapped up the body, put it in a sack and buried it in a shallow grave in the compound," she told police.
Area chief Joseph Muraya said Ms Onjeri confessed to him and police officers at Sirale police post on January 25 this year that her husband had killed their daughter.
"They were involved in a domestic quarrel and as we were solving the matter, the wife told us the husband had killed their daughter and buried the body secretly,” Muraya said.
He said that police launched investigations before locating the grave several metres from the couple's rented house.
Since January 25, this year police officers have been manning the grave, as they waited for the court to give exhumation orders.
Ogat Ondieki, a relative, said the family was in shock and appealed to the government to ensure justice was served.
The exhumed body parts were taken to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital mortuary for a post mortem.
