Turkana health workers have been warned against stealing and selling drugs at Lodwar referral hospital.

The warning comes following numerous complaints from patients that some drugs are missing while others have a shortage.

County referral hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr. Stephen Ekitela while sounding the warning said those found will be sacked.

Ekitela said it is selfish for health workers to steal the drugs with greed to sell them at higher prices.

Ekitela sounded the warning during the launch of  Youth friendly Centre.

He said he is aware of the reports and complaints of missing drugs at hospital despite the efforts of county government prioritizing to purchase drugs for patients.

"Those found selling drugs will be dealt with according to the law. We are keenly following the reports and soon we shall sack those found conspiring to make   deals of selling drugs and others who direct patients to buy them at their chemists," he said.

Ekitela further urged residents to be vigilant in cooperating and giving reports whenever such incidents occur.

Joseph Lokaale,a resident of Lodwar decried that it's hard for the patients to get drugs at Hospital as directed by doctor.

"We rarely get access of drugs at hospital whenever directed by doctor. The nurses tell us  there is no drugs but direct us to specific chemist where we find them," he said.

His sentiments were echoed by Ann Ekiru who said there needs to be an urgent intervention to establish why the facility has been hit by severe drug shortage.
