Kitui governor hopeful David Musila who was cleared on Monday has said his camp is being provoked to engage in violence by his rival.

He said his campaign team was peaceful despite provocation by goons hired by an opponent in the race.

Musila said the opponent also hired goons to destroy his posters and disrupt his campaign meetings in various places.

He said during the 2017 election he faced the same predicament but no help was forthcoming.

“I want to assure you that my team knows no violence,”  Musila said.

His UDA counterpart, Jonathan Mueke, called on the authorities to take action against aspirants who violate the electoral code of conduct.

The leaders spoke after they were presented with the clearance certificate by the Kitui county returning officer Macharia Gichichi on Tuesday, at the Kitui Multi-purpose Training and Development Institute.

Musila urged IEBC to deal with the opponent before his team loses patience and reiterates.

He urged Gichichi to act and ensure that his opponent who was stalking violence was cautioned.

“When these things happen, we always report to authorities but there is a provocation that we may be unable to stand. We appeal to our competitors to obey the code of conduct,” Musila said.

Mueke said all candidates should be given free access to any part of Kitui for them to campaign and sell their ideas and agendas.

He said they should also be given adequate security.

“We want to campaign without fear and favour. We do not believe in people’s strongholds,” he said.
