Former Nairobi Mayor Geoffrey Majiwa is ODM nominee for city county assembly deputy speaker.
The nomination of the Baba Dogo ward representative is part of last week's deal in which the Minority (ODM) supported Jubilee’s Benson Mutura for the speaker’s position.
A written communication from secretary general Edwin Sifuna and national chairperson John Mbadi said the nomination (by the party’s Central Committee) was “in line with the ongoing efforts to create a harmonious environment in the House”.
Sifuna noted that Jubilee had pledged to give the the deputy speaker’s seat to the Minority.
“Jubilee promised to give us the deputy speaker’s position and so we have picked Mr Majiwa as the deputy speaker designate,” he said.
Deputy Speaker John Kamangu, a Jubilee MCA, has yet to resign.
In the latest changes, Karen MCA David Mberia has been replaced as leader of Minority by Embakasi's Michael Ogada.
Mberia had served the office since November last year when he took over from Kileleshwa MCA Elias Otieno.
In the new line-up, Patrick Musili, who was his deputy, has been replaced by nominated MCA Melab Atema.
Sifuna said Mberia had resigned, hence his replacement. He said the decision to replace him was arrived at in a meeting chaired by party leader Raila Odinga two weeks ago.
"This was a decision of the Central Committee meeting, which we had one-and-a-half weeks ago but yesterday we had a meeting with the outgoing leadership to explain the reasons for the decisions, which they agreed with. We met only the former Minority leader and Nairobi West MCA Gari [Otieno],” Sifuna said.
Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok and his Kilimani counterpart Moses Ogeto retained their positions as Minority chief whip and deputy chief whip respectively.
Gari was replaced as the Minority representative in the County Assembly Service Board by nominated MCA Catherine Okoth. He will henceforth chair the County Assembly ICT committee that was previously chaired by Majiwa.
Nominated MCA Nimo Haji replaces Embakasi MCA Michael Ogada as the deputy chair of the assembly’s Finance, Budget and Appropriations Committee.
Sifuna's and Bandi's letter was copied to Speaker Mutura and Majority leader Abdi Hassan.
