Varsity mourns Karei as 'selfless' leader

A somber mood engulfed Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology following the death of its Chancellor Prof Jonathan ole Karei. Staff, students and villagers mourned Karei, who died on Wednesday.Vice chancellor Prof Stephen Agong said they received news of ole Karei's death with shock.

A somber mood engulfed Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology following the death of its Chancellor Prof Jonathan ole Karei.
Staff, students and villagers mourned Karei, who died on Wednesday.

Vice chancellor Prof Stephen Agong said they received news of ole Karei's death with shock.

He described Kareis death as "untimely", after his appointment to the university.

Karei officiated the university's inaugural graduation ceremony in May.
"He was an astute scholar, a humble leader and selfless philanthropists, who had touched the lives of many intellectuals and general citizenry," Agong said.
With short period as a chancellor, Prof ole Karei provided exemplary leadership in university’s pursuit of excellence in academics, research and community outreach ventures, he said.

Karei

graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Political Science and History from Philander Smith College in 1963.

He obtained his Master of Arts degree from Atlanta University majoring in Political Science, with International Relations as his minor.

Two years later, he got his second masters degree - Master of Public Administration, majoring in Public Administration with Human Resource Management as a minor - from University of Pittsburgh.

In 1971, he obtained a Master of Arts degree in International Relations (major), and Administrative Management and International Law and Diplomacy (minor) from the University of Pennsylvania.

In the same year, 1971, Karei earned his PhD degree in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1966, Karei was appointed Assistant Professor of Political Science and Geography at Voorhees College.

He served as an associate professor of Political Science at the same university between 1972 and 1974 before being promoted to a professor of Political Science.
