In Summary

  • •This habit is sometimes triggered by their parents, who are too deep into archaic societal norms.
  • •This is so wrong in all aspects yet parents are supposed to protect their children.
A man shows the logo of a T-shirt that reads "Stop the Cut", referring to Female Genital Mutilation.

Though the government outlawed female genital mutilation, some people are still practising it, especially during school holidays.

The perpetrators take it as an advantage because, by then, all young girls aged between nine and 17 years are at home and they force them to undergo the cut.

This habit is sometimes triggered by their parents, who are too deep into archaic societal norms.

This is so wrong in all aspects because parents are supposed to protect their children.

Girls should be accorded the respect they deserve, and their interests should be observed like any other person.

Some reports show that the practice of FGM is common in some places like Central Kenya.

Most people ignore the impacts they impose on the girls, that can affect them.

In some cases, religions also contribute to elevating the practice of Female cut.

All this happens because operators are not seriously punished.

The government should save young girls from all this pain.

Ironically, top leaders who are supposed to be on the frontline to help young Kenyans, are too deep into campaigns, forgetting the interest of common citizens.

They should work jointly with the parents, chiefs, police officers and village elders to ensure that this habit stops.

They should ensure parents who practice such archaic norms are arrested and punished to act as an example.

The state should also intervene by raising community awareness about the negative part of the female cut so that people understand its effects.

In fighting this battle, men should also be involved in the conversation.

However, one of the main reasons why FGM happens is to control women's sexuality and that stems from patriarchy.

The government should also fund and support activists, this will enable them to succeed in fighting against it.

Let's all stand up and fight against FGM to make society a better and safe place for our girls and women.
