Rugby enthusiasts and fans will be keeping a close eye on the World Seven Series promotion playoffs in Spain this weekend as Shujaa seek to return to core status for the 2024-2025 season.
Shujaa were sent tumbling from the World Sevens top tier a year ago after enjoying the core status for a record 19 years.
Twelve months later, Shujaa believe they can reclaim their position after learning their lessons from the rugby wilderness.
A return to core status will see Kenya earn grants from the governing body World Rugby for the team as well as sponsorship and other benefits, which will help grassroots rugby in the country.
But should Kenya qualify, there is little time to celebrate as Kenya Rugby Union must plan for the upcoming season as well as have proper structures in place.
KRU chairman Alexander Mutai and the team must put in place a feeder system to complement the national team like what other big rugby nations around the world are doing.
On the 15s front, the league has been taken over by the corporate and institutional sides like champions Kabras, KCB, Menengai Oilers and Strathmore Leos.
The hitherto vibrant community clubs, who dominated the rugby landscape in years past like Impala, Nondies, Quins and Mwamba are struggling to match the big budgets their counterparts are enjoying.
The corporate clubs have to tap the best players and coaches as well as identify and nurture talent from the grassroots. All in all it's a big weekend for rugby and we wish Shujaa all the best.
