The International Criminal Court has applied for arrest warrants against Israeli and Hamas leaders, specifically Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh.

ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan was right to seek to charge both Israeli and Hamas leaders although Netanyahu has claimed that the ICC is therefore anti-semitic and that there is no moral equivalence between Hamas and Israel.

But the death of seven million Jews in the Holocaust cannot mean that Israel is permanently exempt from charges of crimes against humanity.

The world, including many Jews outside Israel, is in general agreement that Israel's attacks on Gaza, where 35,000 Palestinians have died and 60 percent of buildings have been destroyed, has not been proportionate.

Now Israel is threatening to invade Rafah even though it is impossible to permanently eradicate Hamas.

Hamas leaders must also be charged. Hamas was the aggressor when it attacked Israel on October 7 and brutally murdered 1,200 Israelis. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the increasing Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, the actions of Hamas were morally wrong.

Both Israel and Hamas must answer for their crimes.
