In Summary
  • The CS should also ensure that there is 100 per cent transition across the country because education is a right for every child.
  • The case of schools charging parents “illegal” fees and forcing them to buy uniforms from select shops should not be allowed to happen again.

Form 1 placements have been announced. According to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, 42,927 KCPE candidates secured places in national schools.

High school admissions are no simple matter. From considering diversity to academic accomplishments to gender and affirmative action, among other influencing factors, the process of admitting students into secondary schools in today’s world is no easy task but can be done fairly.

Some students have previously ended up in national schools unfairly because their parents bought their way at the expense of students who merited but were from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The CS must ensure this corruption does not go on because it’s neither right nor fair. He must ensure that the criteria agreed on are used to place deserving students in secondary schools. National schools are prestigious and must reflect the country’s diversity.

The CS should also ensure that there is 100 per cent transition across the country because education is a right for every child.

Finally, the case of schools charging parents “illegal” fees and forcing them to buy uniforms from select shops should not be allowed to happen again. This practice denies children an opportunity to complete their studies.
