POLICE BRUTALITY

Koome remarks careless and insensitive

In Summary
  • All too often, officers who kill or injure people using force unlawfully are not brought to justice because their seniors like Koome are not keen to cooperate.
  • The police are not above the law. The Constitution is very clear on everyone’s rights. No law gives the right to kill.

Inspector General Japhet Koome has claimed that opposition leaders “hired dead bodies” to justify claims police used excessive force to quell demonstrations.

He defended the police, saying they acted within the law.

While the IG is entitled to his remarks, it’s careless and insensitive for him to be seen playing politics with the lives that were lost.

Koome should be condemned because his remarks amounted to him dancing on the graves of those who died.

All too often, officers who kill or injure people using force unlawfully are not brought to justice because their seniors like Koome are not keen to cooperate.

Many times the Independent Policing Oversight Authority has been intimidated by police officers while investigating police excesses or abuse of police powers.

The police are not above the law. The Constitution is very clear on everyone’s rights. No law gives the right to kill.

Police should stop using force against the law, and those who kill unlawfully must be brought to account – no more excuses.
