Bipartisan talks between Kenya Kwanza and Azimio will take place in the National Assembly.
Apparently Azimio has accepted the government's agreement that data should be preserved on the election servers and that Azimio should participate in the restructuring of the IEBC. So it looks unlikely, for now, that Azimio will resume its protests in two weeks' time.
Compromise is needed on both sides. Azimio is still calling for the Finance Bill to be withdrawn, for the cost of living to be reduced and for by-elections to be held for all Jubilee MPs. These demands are unrealistic.
Withdrawing the Finance Bill would mean ditching the entire Budget. Azimio should take issue with specific provisions like the Housing Levy rather than rejecting the whole Bill.
The soaring cost of living is a problem in every country in the world. It is a global problem that can only be managed, not eliminated.
Azimio needs to defeat the Finance Bill in Parliament rather than on the streets. Holding these by-elections would not only be very expensive, it would constitute a virtual re-run of the election.
So let both sides compromise so that protests do not bring chaos to our streets again.
