In Summary

  • What the drivers fail to understand is that while chasing extra cash, they might end up dying or getting maimed in an accident.
  • In the end, the price of their reckless indiscretion becomes extremely costly.

The festive season is here with us and everyone is preparing to travel to different parts of the country to celebrate with their loved ones.

And normally accidents on the roads sharply increase during the festive season.

Only on Saturday three Chogoria Girls' High School students perished in a road accident. Last week in the same sub-county, a bus was involved in an accident in which the driver died and 25 students were injured.

Almost always, speeding of public service vehicles is motivated by the greed to dash and make many trips, which translate into more money in drivers' pockets.

What the drivers fail to understand is that while chasing extra cash, they might end up dying or getting maimed in an accident. In the end, the price of their reckless indiscretion becomes extremely costly.

And for this reason, it is important that PSV drivers exercise extra caution.

Traffic police officers also have to be extra vigilant and punish errant drivers. It is important that they re-introduce speed guns on the roads during this festive season and heavily fine those found in breach.

Wananchi or passengers too have a duty to report to police drivers in breach of speed limits.

The National Transport and Safety Authority must come out in force and enforce the speed governor rules and ensure all PSVs have installed a working gadget.

It is better to get to one's destination in peace rather than in pieces.
