Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has wondered what the end goal for Azimio's call for mass action is.

In a statement on Monday, Ngunyi said the quest to kick President William Ruto out of State House was going to fail, wondering what followed.

"I believe in civil disobedience as taught by John Locke. But what is the end goal of mass action? Ruto Must Go? We know this will not happen. How does it end? That is the question Babaman must answer," he said.

Locke, an English Philosopher believed that the government derived its power from the people in a sort of social contract.

He said the government was mandated to protect the people's natural rights and that they had the right to alter them should it fail to uphold its end of the bargain.

Raila has based the reasons for the initiative to overthrow Ruto's "illegitimate" government on the failure to lower the cost of living as promised, among other issues.

On Thursday, a day after the lapse of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the government to address his demands, Raila launched an initiative dubbed Movement for Defence of Democracy.

He announced a mass action beginning March 20.

"Those 14 days elapsed last midnight with Kenya Kwanza having done absolutely nothing. Today, we make good our promise to Ruto and his illegitimate Kenya Kwanza regime. We unleash the people's power for action and launch the Movement for Defence of Democracy," he said while speaking in Nairobi.

Raila cited other issues including over-taxation, ongoing reconstitution of IEBC, electoral deceit, victimisation of four IEBC commissioners, mishandling of Azimio presidential petition by the apex court and state capture of the other arms of government.

He termed the IEBC selection panel a Ruto puppet that the President intends to use "to have an undue advantage in the 2027 general elections".

"For this reason, Ruto must go!" Raila said.
