Education CS George Magoho has been banging heads at our universities, urging them to think outside the box, to reform.
But that is as far as it goes. The old Professor is himself anti-reform, a man stuck in the old days who still dreams of his days as the vice chancellor of the University of Nairobi.
He does not want to let go of the university, often trying to meddle and control it from his Ministry of Education office.
Recently, the university came up with a raft of measures to streamline operations, cut costs and reform. But like a rhino out of the woods, Prof Magoha has slammed the brakes on the university’s agenda, urging status quo be observed.
So what reforms does he want to see universities undertake? Must they be spelt out and be guided by him, to appeal to his conscience? Magoha should stop micro managing UoN, as if he is still the VC. He had his turn during which he could have initiated the reforms he is singing about.
There is a lot ailing the Education ministry, which requires his urgent attention instead of making UoN his preoccupation.
Workers in public universities have not enjoyed their 2017-2021 CBA, an issue that threatens to boil out of control yet it appears to be a non-issue to the Prof.
What reforms did he initiate during his time as VC?
