One person died Friday morning in an accident involving a bus and a trailer on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
Five others were seriously injured, police said.
The trailer rammed into the side of the fully packed bus near the Gilgil weighbridge.
Witnesses accused the trailer's driver, who escaped, of falling asleep on the wheel.
Lorry driver John Omoro said the trailer's driver was weaving in his lane before driving to the other one and directly into the path of the oncoming bus.
He said the bus driver swerved and the trailer rammed into the side of the vehicle. “We suspect that the trailer's driver dozed off while driving,” Omoro said.
Gilgil OCPD Emmanuel Opuru confirmed the accident, saying 12 passengers were injured, five of them seriously.
“The driver of the trailer fled soon after the accident and those injured have been admitted at Gilgil Subcounty Hospital in stable condition,” he said.
The accident caused a traffic snarl-up as police and motorists helped rescue the victims.
Meanwhile, the flower farm worker who was sexually abused and murdered on her way to work in Naivasha has been buried.
Mother of three Nancy Wangui was interred at her family’s home in Karagita. Police were urged to arrest her attackers, who cut her leg and gouged out one of her eyes.
The body of Wangui, who had been missing since New Year, was found buried in a shallow grave with some parts missing.
Her brother Anthony Mburu urged owners of flower farms to provide transport to their workers as they leave their homes very early in the morning.
“We hope no family goes through the pain we have experienced. To those who brutally killed out innocent sister, God will avenge us,” he said.
