The National Transport Safety Authority has urged motor vehicle
dealers to register all their vehicles by December 16, 2024.
NTSA Director General said the directive followed the realization
that many motor vehicle dealers are having unregistered vehicles within their
premises.
“Following the
completion of the initiative, the Authority notes that several motor vehicle
dealers are holding UNREGISTERED vehicles within their premises (showrooms and
yards) contrary to the requirements of the Traffic Act, Cap 403,” the director
general said.
“To this end and through this Notice, the Authority directs
all motor vehicle dealers to complete pending motor vehicle registration
applications by Monday 16th December 2024.”
Dealers who fail to comply with the directive, the director
general warned, will have their vehicles impounded.
“Law enforcement agencies are advised to impound vehicles
operating without registration plates, those illegally using Kenya Dealer
Plates (KD) and charge the respective dealers and owners,” the director
general said.
The directive follows a multi-agency revalidation exercise
comprising of National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Kenya Revenue
Authority (KRA), Financial Reporting Centre (FRC), Directorate of Immigration
Services (DIS) and Security Agencies.
The National Transport and Safety Authority is mandated to
licence and regulate motor vehicle and motorcycle dealers.
The aim of the exercise was to ascertain compliance with
relevant provisions of the law and to weed out non-compliant dealers operating
illegally within the country.
