Residents mill around the scene where a man's body was found dumped in Matungulu, Machakos county on June 28, 2026.
Police have launched investigations after a human skeleton, believed to have been stripped of flesh by hyenas, was discovered in Kamulu, adding to a string of mysterious death incidents reported across Machakos County.
The remains were found on Monday at about 4.27 pm in Athi View village, Kamulu, in Athi River Sub-county after a local administrator reported the discovery to Kamulu Police Post.
According to police, the skeleton is suspected to belong to an adult whose body may have been dragged away and eaten by hyenas before the remains were found.
One of the first responders at the scene said the extent of decomposition made it impossible to immediately establish whether the remains belonged to a man or a woman.
"Hyenas ate all the flesh, leaving behind a skull and skeleton only. It isn't easy to tell whether it belongs to a man or woman," the source said.
Police processed and documented the scene before moving the remains to the Nairobi City Mortuary as investigations continue.
The discovery came a day after the body of a man was found dumped along the Tala–Kinyui Road in the Sengai area of the neighbouring Matungulu Sub-county.
Residents said they recognised the deceased as a quarry worker from the area.
Police responded to the scene, documented the incident and moved the body to a mortuary.
A local administrator said preliminary findings suggest the man may have been killed elsewhere before his body was dumped at the scene.
"We suspect that this man was killed elsewhere and his body dumped at the scene since it wasn't there in the morning," the administrator said.
He urged residents to remain vigilant, saying cases of bodies being dumped in the sub-county and other parts of Machakos were becoming increasingly common.
In a separate incident in Mlolongo, Athi River Sub-county, the body of another man was found by the roadside near Cooperative Bank on Friday.
Police said the deceased had visible physical injuries. Officers processed the scene before transferring the body to a mortuary pending further investigations.
In another case within Athi River Sub-county, police are investigating the death of 22-year-old Daniel Mwongela Muasya, whose body was found inside an iron-sheet structure in the Slota area on Thursday.
According to a police report, officers found the body with bruises on the lips after receiving a report from a local administrator.
Police said the deceased's father, Darlington Muasya Kyangulu, told investigators he had last seen his son on June 24 at around 5 pm at their rented house in Slota and that he had been in good health.
The body was moved to Shallom Community Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the cause of death. Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Athi River are investigating all the incidents.
