The Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja now says that a ballistic probe has established that the gun used in Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were’s murder is linked to three other robbery incidents in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.

In a statement, Kanja said the pistol was recovered from one of the suspects arrested.

Through a swift deployment of forensic teams, use of advanced ballistics, and public cooperation, the government has dismantled a gang linked to multiple crimes.

“The ballistic report we have received unequivocally links the Sarsilmaz pistol, recovered from the residence of one of the suspects, to the fatal shots that took his life," Kanja said.

“This critical piece of evidence not only identifies the weapon used in this heinous act but also reveals its involvement in a series of other criminal activities. Specifically, the same firearm has been implicated in three separate robbery incidents across Nairobi and Kiambu Counties, with the most recent crime occurring on April 26, 2025,” Kanja said.

So far, there are at least 10 suspects in custody, with more said to be still at large.

Items recovered include two firearms, clothing linked to the suspects, and other forensic exhibits.

Investigators also obtained CCTV footage and tracked movements from Parliament to the crime scene, offering crucial leads.

Money believed to have been paid to the suspects to commit the crime was also recovered, said Kanja.

The legislator was fatally shot while driving in a white Toyota Crown along Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi at around 7:40 pm on April 30, 2025.

The vehicle had stopped at a red traffic light when a motorcycle carrying a rider and a pillion passenger pulled alongside.

The pillion passenger approached the passenger's side of the vehicle, fired multiple shots, and fled the scene on the motorcycle.

The government, through the National Police Service, continues to make significant progress in the ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting of Were.

A specialised team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ Homicide Bureau and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was immediately deployed to the scene.

An autopsy performed on May 2 at the Lee Funeral Home by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor revealed that MP Were had five gunshot wounds, all of which entered his body from the left side.

Two bullets were recovered during the autopsy, and a third was found in the deceased's vehicle, which were submitted for ballistic analysis.

The driver and the bodyguard, both unharmed, rushed Were to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Were is scheduled to be laid to rest at his rural home in Kasipul on Friday, May 9, 2025.

Kanja has assured the public of continued diligence and transparency in pursuing justice.
