The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has condemned the violence witnessed at Gusii stadium during a match between Shabana and Gor Mahia football clubs.
The federation, in a statement, insisted that football must at all times remain a sport that unites the people, not divides them.
FKF said that it is working with authorities to establish the root cause of the violence and take disciplinary action.
“FKF strongly condemns all forms of violence in our stadiums. Football must remain a sport that brings people together - not one that puts lives at risk. The safety and well-being of fans, players, and officials remain a top priority for the Federation.
“We are working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest. Decisive disciplinary measures will be taken upon conclusion of ongoing investigations,” the federation said.
FKF president Hussein Mohammed reiterated that violence has no place in football and that it is time for more action and less talk.
“It’s time for more action and less talk. What happened today at Gusii Stadium is unacceptable. Violence has no place in our game. FKF will act decisively. We owe it to our fans, players, and the future of Kenyan football.”
Several football fans were reportedly injured after Gor Mahia and Shabana FC supporters started engaging in stone throwing at the Gusii Stadium.
The fans clashed ahead of the much-awaited game at the Gusii Stadium, which was scheduled to start at 2 pm.
In a video seen by the Star, some of the fans could be seen throwing stones while others tried to scamper for safety.
The chaos erupted from two stands at the regular section housing fans from both teams when they started pelting stones at each other, leaving scores with injuries.
Efforts by the Stadium announcers to request the fans to remain calm were futile, as they continued throwing stones.
They continued to make repeated appeals for calm before urgently requesting ambulances to transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.
