Newly appointed senior advisor to President William Ruto, Makau Mutua, has told off Kenyans who have criticised him for taking the job.
In a statement, Mutua questioned why some people were angry that he took the job.
He insisted that he could not think of a better way to serve his home country after serving at higher levels of the law profession in the United States.
“Why are some folks vexed — anguished — about my decision to accept the appointment by H.E President William Ruto as Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs? I’ve spent my entire life in the law at the highest levels, especially in the United States. I can’t think of a better way to serve my native Kenya,” Mutua stated.
The Professor of Law said he is certain that if the same persons complaining were called to take up the job, they would take it without a second thought.
He asked the critics to calm down and let qualified people serve the country.
Mutua insisted that he believes his expertise will be useful to President Ruto and the country.
“I am sure some of those upset would readily accept the appointment. Chill, folks, and let those who are qualified serve the country. I believe my expertise will be of good service to the President and the country,” he added.
His remarks followed an uproar from social media users who hit at him over remarks he made earlier that he would never work with Ruto.
Ruto appointed Mutua as Senior Adviser of Constitutional Affairs in his office.
"Congratulations Prof Mutua. I welcome you to join a dynamic team of public servants in the implementation of our Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda," Ruto said in a statement Wednesday evening.
Mutua is a former Azimio spokesperson, and his appointment further serves to demonstrate Ruto's commitment to working with the opposition wing led by Raila Odinga, following the signing of their working pact in March.
“I am grateful to His Excellency, President William Ruto, for appointing me Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President. Our Constitution is the beating heart of the Republic. Mr President, I promise to serve you and our fellow citizens with diligence, honour, and distinction,” he had remarked on the appointment.
