The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has announced the birth of a new Balck Rhino at the Sera Community Rhino Sanctuary in Samburu.

In a statement on Monday, KWS said the male black rhino calf was sighted alongside the mother in the sanctuary a few days ago.

It was sighted by KWS’s Wamba Platoon team and the Sera rhino monitors.

“We are thrilled to share the news of a new black rhino calf born at Sera Community Rhino Sanctuary. The Kenya Wildlife Service Wamba Platoon team, together with Sera rhino monitors, sighted the proud mother and her healthy male calf a few days ago. Every birth is a victory for conservation — together, we are securing the future of this iconic species!” the service said.

This brings the total number of black rhinos to 23.

In October 2024, another black rhino was born at Loisaba Conservancy, a month after the translocation exercise.

The Kenya Wildlife Service announced that Kibou, an eight-year-old black rhino originally from Ol Pejeta Conservancy, gave birth to her first calf on October 16, 2024.

Kenya now hosts the third-largest rhino population in Africa, following South Africa and Namibia.

It has taken 20 years of relentless work by stakeholders to pull the black rhino back from the brink in Africa.

It is a species of conservation concern following a dramatic reduction in their population in the 1970s and early 1980s from approximately 20,000 as a result of the illegal trade in their horn to fewer than 400 animals in 1987.

Poaching and trafficking of rhino horn continue to plague the black rhino and threaten its recovery.
