One person was killed and 13 others injured in a road accident involving six vehicles at the White House area in Nakuru town.

Police said the accident occurred after a lorry carrying sand lost its breaks and rammed the cars.

A report from the Nakuru East Base Commander indicated that the accident occurred along the Solai-Nakuru road at around 3pm.

It said vehicles involved were a Mitsubishi lorry a Toyota Corolla belonging to a driving school, a private van (Nissan), a Matatu, a Toyota Corolla, and an Isuzu lorry.

"It happened that the Mitsubishi lorry was being driven from Solai general direction towards Nakuru; reaching the point of impact the motor vehicle failed brakes and lost control; in the process hit the above-named motor vehicles, and one passenger was fatally injured," the report said.

The report said one driver and six passengers were seriously injured, while seven passengers sustained slight injuries.

"They were all rushed to Provincial General Hospital Nakuru undergoing treatment as the body was kept at the same facility for preservation and postmortem. Motor vehicles removed from scene, towed to the station pending inspection."

The accident adds to rising road carnage in the country as the festive season gathers momentum.

It occurred barely 24 hours after six people lost their lives in two separate accidents in Narok county.

Five people died on the Narok-Bomet road when a 14-seater matatu they were travelling in collided head-on with a school bus at 6pm Sunday.

Police said at least 26 other people were injured in the crash, which was blamed on the alleged reckless overtaking of the school bus at a bridge.

"Three people, all passengers in the matatu, died on the spot. The injured were rushed to Ololulunga Subcounty Hospital, where two women and a girl succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment," Narok police boss Rico Ngare said.

On Saturday, one person also died along the Narok-Bomet road at Tegero area when a Toyota car and a passenger bus collided head-on.

A police report said the accident occurred at around 4am when the driver of a Toyota car lost control and veered off his lane before colliding with the bus.

Police said three other passengers in the car were injured, but none of the passengers in the bus sustained injuries.
