Parliament gets Sh4.4 billion more in 2024-25 Budget

The National Treasury has allocated Sh44.6 billion to Parliament in the 2024-25 Budget.

National Treasury Cabinet Secretary said the allocation will enhance legislation and the role of Parliament in the affairs of the country.

The allocation to Parliament, which comprises the National Assembly and the Senate, was an increase of Sh4.4 billion from the 2023-24 Financial Year.

During the 2023-24 Financial Year, Ndung’u allocated Parliament a total of Sh40.4 billion.

Parliament approved overall spending for the year at Sh4 trillion, up from the Sh3.75 shillings the Ndung’u presented last June for the financial year 2023-24.

It is President William Ruto’s second Budget, which he intends to use to establish the bottom-up economic model amid tough economic times shrouded with the high cost of living and pressure to service debt.

The 2024-25 budget is estimated to cost Sh3.91 trillion. Of the amount, Sh1.58 trillion is meant for recurrent expenditure, Sh727.9 billion for development expenditure, Sh1.21 trillion for consolidated fund services and Sh400 billion for county equitable share.

To foot this budget, the government targets to collect Sh2.91 trillion from ordinary revenue and Sh441 billion from ministerial appropriation in aid.

The National Treasury has estimated a deficit of Sh508.9 billion of which it seeks to acquire Sh257.9 billion from borrowing from domestic lenders.

The remaining amount of Sh256.7 billion will be sourced from international lenders.

The 2023/2024 Budget was an increase by Sh251 billion from the 2022/23 budget which stood at Sh3.39 trillion.
