Malawi president to address nation over VP Chilima's missing aircraft

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera is set to address the nation regarding the missing aircraft that was carrying the country's Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others.

An aircraft carrying Malawi's vice president went missing on Monday Morning after disappearing from airport radars.

“The public is hereby informed that Chakwera will address the nation today at 12pm (1 pm Kenyan Time). The address will be broadcast live on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation platforms and other media channels,” the invite read.

A senior military official told the BBC that the plane carrying Malawi's vice president may have crashed in a forest in the north of the country.

Saulos Chilima and nine others were flying within the country on Monday morning when their aircraft disappeared from airport radars.

The military aircraft, was flying in bad weather.

Soldiers have been searching Chikangawa Forest to find the plane.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Malawi Defence Force commander Paul Valentino Phiri said fog has reduced visibility in the forest, thus complicating search efforts.

President Lazarus Chakwera has said the mission must continue until the plane is found.

He told Malawians in an address on Monday evening: "I know that we are all frightened and concerned - I too am concerned.
