KNH conducted 520 open heart surgeries in 9 months – PS Kimtai

Kenyatta National Hospital

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) conducted 520 open heart surgeries between July 1, 2023-March 31, 2024, State Department for Medical Services Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai has revealed.

Kimtai further noted that KNH conducted 987 cardiothoracic surgeries during the period.

The PS made the remarks while outlining the non-financial achievements of the State Department to the National Assembly’s Committee on Health during consideration of the Financial Year 2024/25 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure.

Kimtai added that the referral hospital conducted 16 kidney transplants and 3,645 minimally invasive surgeries.

“The hospital gave 427 specialised burns treatment and offered 22,131 oncology sessions to patients. Furthermore, KNH conducted 280 multi-disciplinary outreaches with counties,” he stated.

The PS told the committee that Mwai Kibaki Hospital and Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital in Nairobi undertook 1,404 and 26 minimally invasive surgeries respectively.

“Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital undertook 2,968 minimally invasive surgeries, 20,181 chemotherapy sessions, 68 open heart surgeries, 17,559 external beam radiotherapy sessions, 356 brachytherapy sessions and 46 corneal transplants,” Kimtai added.

He further said Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital conducted 5,280 (positron emission tomography) PET scans, 460 single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT- CT scan), 222 stereotactic radio surgeries, 359 brachytherapy sessions, 23 open heart surgeries, 1,717 minimally invasive surgeries, 5,069 hemodialysis and 16,878 chemo and radiotherapy treatment.

“Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital undertook six community mental outreaches and had an 80 per cent success rate of re-integration of patients into the community,” the PS said.

He noted that the East African Centre of Excellence for Skills and Tertiary Education saw a 14 per cent improvement in completion rate and now stands at 98 per cent cumulative completion.

He said the Medical Equipment Supplies (MES) equipment installed at the centre was offering essential and critical health care service with a 95 per cent operability.

The PS said Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) published 353 research papers, had 220 research abstracts presented and held two health scientific conferences.

“The number of diagnostic kits produced at KEMRI was 163,417. Moreover, it conducted 626,501 specialised laboratory tests,” he stated.

Kimtai said the National Cancer Control Programme saw the number of women of reproductive age screened for cervical cancer at 546,375.

“The number of cancer patients receiving radiotherapy services at the regional cancer centres was 18,981. National Cancer Institute reached 30 million people on cancer prevention and control,” he said.

He added that the National Aids Control Council (NACC) distributed 3,945,335 condoms in non-health settings, while the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP) saw 1,337,544 clients on Anti-Retroviral Treatment.
