Former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has yet again weighed in on his impeachment from office.

Sonko said his efforts to dismantle the syphoning of millions of money in the county government of Nairobi led to his impeachment.

He said constant friction with what he described as "the deep state officials in government" on several issues affecting Nairobians led to his ouster.

"I severally refused to allow illegal demolitions in slums without compensation of the victims. This angered a former cabinet secretary and his PS who even nicknamed me as big-headed to the government of the day," Sonko said in an interview with Obina TV.

Sonko said upon his election in 2017, he inherited a semi-digital cash collection system which only collected monies from 14 revenue streams as opposed to the intended 136 streams.

He said this left loopholes in the system that allowed cartels within city hall and some officers from the then national government to loot from the public.

His intervention to digitalise the system and ban cash collection, he says, was met with stiff opposition from cartels within City Hall.

"Some cashiers at the office in City Hall used to collect millions each day manually and share it among themselves before banking the remainder," he claimed.

"When I digitalised the whole system, the move angered cartels and I became an enemy of everybody."

Sonko says the move denied them access to revenue collected daily and freed City Hall from corruption off City Hall.

Addressing accusations that he failed to deliver as expected, Sonko said his track record speaks loudly for itself.

He said among the projects he initiated are Dandora stadium, 5 modern fire stations, 5 maternity blocks, a health centre in Kangemi and over 200 kilometres of roads.

"I did Dandora stadium, they refused to acknowledge that. I did several markets; some have not been officially opened. I constructed five fire stations within the city and I intended to construct 17 more; each in every sub-county," Sonko said.

Sonko insisted that his impeachment was illegal and politically instigated.
