A group of Meru leaders have come out to defend Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi against the impeachment he is facing at the National Assembly.

Led by Meru Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma, the leaders exonerated the CS from blame terming his woes a political witchhunt.

On Tuesday, the Deputy Governor while flanked by a group of MCAs asked President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua to intervene and save the CS from impeachment.

According to the group, CS Linturi is the only CS from the region and should therefore be protected.

"We expect the eleven committee members of the national assembly that have been given the mandate, to give a positive report on Linturi for he is a policy maker in the ministry of agriculture," Mutuma said.

"Mithika is not a manufacturer of fertilizer neither is he fertilizer supplier, he should be allowed to serve Kenyans."

The group of leaders said the Meru people have the right to protect what he termed as their rightful share in the Kenya Kwanza government.

They said the impeachment of CS Linturi would be a blow to the community as they would lack a representative in the executive arm of the government.

One of the MCA who spoke said Linturi's impeachment, if it happens, would have consequences on the support they have for the Kenya Kwanza government.

"Deputy President should stand firm with the Mount Kenya people. When Mithika is safe Meru people are also safe," MCA said.

An eleven-member committee was formed by the National Assembly to probe the allegation level against Linturi by the mover of impeachment motion Bumula MP Wamboka Wanami.

The hearing began Wednesday and will run for three days after which the committee will retreat to write a report that will be submitted before the National Assembly on Monday, May 13.
