Police are investigating an incident in which a shop attendant was shot dead by an unknown gang in, Ramasha, Kisii County.

The incident at the Chironge area in Masaba South saw the shopkeeper, identified as Thomas Achanda, 72 shot dead at close range.

He was shot in his shop at about 9 pm on Monday, police said.

Witnesses said he was confronted by two men who had arrived on a motorcycle.

This prompted a brief argument before the deceased was shot in the chest, police said.

The gang jumped onto their motorcycle to escape without stealing anything from the shop.

It was then that they also shot a man who was outside the shop in the lower part of the right foot.

Officers from Ramasha police station arrived at the scene moments after the gang had escaped.

A team of detectives has been sent to the area to pursue the matter, police said.

No arrest has been made so far but police said they are following crucial leads into the incident.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

The injured man was admitted to a local hospital in a stable condition, police said.

Such armed robberies have been on the rise in the area amid police efforts to address them.

In the Nyosia area, Kisii County, police shot and deflated tyres of a vehicle to stop a gang that had attacked and vandalized a power transmission station.

The gang had posed as guards at the local Ketraco station before driving to the site.

Police said the gang stole two laptops and two mobile phones before vandalizing fibre cables at the firm.

They then fled the scene. This was after they had attacked and injured the guards on duty. One of the guards was seriously injured.

Managing John Mativo said the gang vandalized critical control cables thereby compromising the protection system.

“During the attack, the vandals forced the operators on duty to switch off all supplies within control buildings, AC and DC. After this, they started cutting control cables in the control buildings and cable ducts. They then unsuccessfully attempted to switch off supply in the switch-yard.”

“The damage was therefore primarily concentrated in the control building and cable ducts. As a precautionary measure, two power transformers rated at 23MVA had to be isolated,” he said.

The incident affected the power supply in the area.

Police said they are investigating the attack to establish the motive.

A team of detectives visited the scene as part of the probe into the attack.
