Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has urged all boat owners, operators and Kenyans to exercise heightened vigilance during the current heavy rainfall season.

Recognizing the heightened reliance on water vessels for transportation amidst widespread flooding across the nation, Mvurya emphasized the critical importance of caution when navigating rivers and lakes.

"The safety of persons using water transport remains the Government’s top priority, and we advise boat owners, boat operators, passengers, fisherfolk, and the general public to adhere to safety measures given," the CS said.

Mvurya said people should wear a life jacket before boarding any water vessel.

He said it is important that the boat crew and passengers including children have a life jacket in case of an emergency.

Mvurya said enforcement measures are being taken by relevant government agencies to ensure strict compliance with the safety guidelines given.

"All persons are advised to avoid crossing flooded rivers during periods of heavy rainfall or strong winds," he said.

Mvurya said vessel maintenance is also critical to ensure proper working conditions.

He said unserviceable vessels must not be operated at any given time.

Additionally, the CS urged that vessel users monitor water levels regularly and should not be overloaded to prevent capsizing.

"Adhere to the maximum passenger capacity limits. Enforcement measures will be taken to ensure strict compliance."

He said vessel owners should prepare for emergencies by having emergency equipment such as communication devices, lighting, and first aid kits readily available on the vessels.

The CS urged boat owners to communicate immediately with other vessels or relevant authorities for emergency assistance when in distress.

Mvurya said vessels should also navigate safely by maintaining a safe distance from other vessels to prevent collisions.

"The Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs remains committed to promoting maritime safety and urges all water users to adhere to these safety measures for their protection and the safety of others," the CS said.

He said those close to water bodies must be prepared to move to safer areas as advised by government agencies and other agencies involved in emergency rescue operations.

"Use the following for Search and Rescue emergency communication: Safaricom: 0721 368 313; Airtel: 0737 719 414; Telkom: 0208007776."
