Former Riruta MCA Samuel Ndungu and two others have been sentenced to 30 years in jail each for the murder of his ex-wife Lucy Njambi.

Judge Joel Ngugi on Friday handed the sentence to Ndung’u and his co-accused Joyce Njambi and Wilson Mwangi at Kiambu High Court after they were found guilty and having had a hand in the murder of Njambi.

Ngugi said that Njambi must have been terrified in the 15 minutes or so that she was driven through Kiambu Mugumoini Ruiru road as she had left her four-year-old with a nanny.

He said she was verbally assaulted, sexually assaulted by one of the assailants and was also physically assaulted as the assailants poured sulphuric acid on her and then left her for the dead. She later died while receiving treatment.

He said during judgment the three accused were found guilty of the death of Njambi.

"In order for him to determine the appropriate sentence in which it will be legitimately imposed includes to punish the offender to the extent and in a manner which is just in all the circumstances, to deter the offender or other persons from  committing offences of the same character, to establish conditions which may facilitate rehabilitation of the offender, to manifest the denunciation by the court of the conduct in question and to protect the community," he said.

He said the family members of the accused who were present confirmed that the abuse was accurately captured and did not wish to address the court.

The grandmother who raised Njambi addressed the court and decried the inhuman manner that Njambi was killed.

"In views reiterated by the family members of Njambi who included the aunts and uncles, said that 'cucu'Gachambi has never healed of the ordeal and has never forgiven the accused as she could not understand why anyone would choose to harm the deceased who they all described to be a peaceful and loving person. They hoped that justice would prevail for effective closure," he said.

The ex-MCA was charged in 2018 for the incident which occurred on the night of January 24, the same year.

Njambi died on January 26, 2018, at the Kenyatta National Hospital where she was receiving treatment after allegedly being raped and doused with acid by people who kidnapped her from her house at Thindigua along Kiambu road on January 24.

She was buried later at her parent's home in Karembu village in Gatundu South constituency.
