The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has released the dates for the tax exemption vetting exercise slated for May.

Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) who would like to be exempted from taxation will be required to present themselves for vetting once the exercise commences.

According to the schedule by the council, the exercise will be conducted between May 6 to May 8 in Kisumu County at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital.

The exercise will also take place on May 6 and 7 in Meru at the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The exercise will also be conducted in Kakamega County at Kakamega Referral Hospital between May 9 and May 11.

On May 8 and 9, the vetting will also take place in Nyeri at Mt Kenya Hospital and on May 10 and 11 in Machakos at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

Between May 13 and 15, the tax exemption vetting exercise will take place in Uasin Gishu County at the Huruma Subcounty Hospital in Eldoret.

Garissa residents will have their chance to attend the vetting exercise on May 13 and 14 at Garissa County Referral Hospital.

The council's schedule shows the exercise will take place between May 16 to 18 in Nakuru at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital and Tudor Subcounty Hospital in Mombasa.

Nairobi residents will have the exercise conducted at the Nairobi NCPWD headquarters between May 27 and 31.

"Carry copies of the documents as submitted during application. Ensure you have registered as a person with a disability on eCitizen," the council said in the notice.

Targeted Kenyans will be required to bring their current payslip,   original letter from their employer, current medical assessment report and a valid tax compliance certificate.

The exercise will be conducted in collaboration with the Kenya Revenue Authority and Ministry of Health in specified counties.

PWDs can get tax exemptions as long as they meet various qualifications such as being registered with the NCPWDs with a valid disability membership card.

They must also possess a disability assessment report that conveys the nature of the disability from a government-gazetted hospital.

In January, Fight Inequality Alliance Kenya (FIA Kenya) called for the elimination of tax havens used by rich Kenyans to conceal the gains acquired from corruption.

The lobby said that the government should remove tax exemptions from items used mainly by the rich – for example, VAT exemptions for helicopters and small aircraft.
