Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has gifted women clean energy cookers at Baraka Primary in  Makongeni, Makadara constituency.

In celebration of International Women's Day, Passaris visited 60 women in Makongeni and gifted them jikos.

She said 2,400 jikos have been distributed to women in all constituencies through the National Government Fund.

Speaking on Friday, Passaris said the initiative will uplift women and eradicate the use of traditional energy sources and promote safety.

"Empowering women on this day with clean-energy cookers at Baraka Primary School to reduce health issues caused by firewood or charcoal," Passaris said.

"Since 1909, women in America were tired of the labour laws and created this day and in Kenya today we work to ensure that the two-thirds gender rule."

Passaris added that the energy cookers are a means to help make their lives better.

"Each woman will have the benefit of two free fuel refills and thereafter can refill at an affordable price of Sh200," she said.

She added that she will also distribute 200 pads to the women while ensuring the initiative will continue in public schools for the benefit of the girl child.

Passaris further urged the women to work together in supporting fellow women in leadership for more representation.

"Out of 85 wards in Nairobi only three women made it to the Parliament, therefore there are still 17 seats left that should be occupied, we should support our fellow women in leadership," Passaris said.

"To have more representation, we require larger numbers as currently 90 per cent of men occupy parliament seats leaving 10 per cent to the women."

She emphasized that women should unite forces in pushing for positions in leadership which will help in addressing issues such as the plight of sanitary pads.

"Currently we work with a budget of Sh9 million for the Women Representative seat which can't cater for the provision of sanitary towels for all public schools," Passaris said.

"However we shall continue offering sanitary pads to public schools while pleading for more funds."

She urged the women to elect more women in the next election for equality.

"If we were more women leaders more funding will be released even for the Constituency Development Fund, therefore help us raise more women," Passaris said.
