Police are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out at a garage in Kiambu Town and burnt down at least eight cars.

The cars were at the Jua Kali garage yard when the fire broke out on Wednesday, police and witnesses said.

The fire was contained by Kiambu county fire engines long after it had destroyed property worth millions of shillings, police said.

Police said they had established that the fire, which started from the garage stores was accelerated by an exploded gas cylinder that burnt assorted garage material and machinery.

Among the cars that were extensively damaged included a Toyota NZE, five Nissan Matatus, a Toyota 71, and a Toyota Prado which had a brand new engine in it to be installed in another grounded vehicle.

No injuries were reported in the incident even as the owners counted losses.

Experts from Kenya Power and Lighting have since joined the probe into the incident, Kiambu police boss Michael Muchiri said.

He said those whose cars were affected are encouraged to pursue compensation even as the probe goes on.

The owners of the vehicles including those of matatus counted losses saying the fire had affected their operations at large.
