Women governors in the country on Monday unveiled their 10 Point Homa Bay Declaration after the successful Pre-Launch event of the G7 - Strategy
The group brings together the 7 elected Governors including Council of Governors Chair Ann Waiguru, Nakuru governor Susan Kihika, Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti, Kwale's Fatuma Achani, Meru's Kawira Mwangaza and Embu's Cecily Mbarire.
Waiguru in her address unpacked the objective of the G-7 strategy saying it is key in bringing positive change in leadership.
"As women Governors, we are focused and determined to ensure that we bring positive change and stand together towards ensuring more women come to power and achieve the two-thirds gender rule," Waiguru said.
Some of the G7 Strategy declarations unpacked were to localize mentorship programmes set up in the women-led 7 counties and lobby for women nominations in various political parties.
They further outlined an increase in women's participation in devolution and voice in decision-making, unity between women governors with women senators to deliver devolution promises and ensure good governance and financial accountability.
The G7 strategy seeks to empower and support women leaders in demonstrating efficient, transformational and strategic governance within the devolved structures.
“The strategy aims to amplify the collective voice of women on national and gender issues, create a women leaders networking platform across various sectors and facilitate mentorship between seasoned leaders and emerging women and girls,” Waiguru said.
In a recent women's leadership meeting held on January 26, the Council of Governors chairperson, Ann Waiguru shared the vision of the G7 strategy ahead of the launch.
“Our vision is to have women-led counties delivering on the promise of devolution and together, l believe we can do it. I also encourage more women to take up political and governance positions and not to shy away from venturing into their field of interest,” said the Council of Governor chair.
She added:
“The development of the G7 strategy is critical in addressing the barriers that women face in rising to leadership and the unique challenges they encounter once in these roles.”
This strategy was backed by other women governors such as Gladys Wanga who emphasized the need for leadership to be geared towards realizing the dreams and aspirations, in the hearts and minds of every Kenyan adding that leadership is about service to the people.
